History of Godzilla

Hey guys. Last time, I went over the Ultra Series. It's main hero, Ultraman, is best known for battling many Daikaiju (translated to Mega Monster). Speaking of Daikaiju, let's go over the history of one of the most infamous monsters of all time, the grandaddy of all tokusatsu, the king of all monsters, Godzilla. Here we will be going over the movies in the franchise, both Japanese & American. So, let's dive into the history of Godzilla.

Godzilla (1954)

This was the first movie that started the franchise and was the first movie of the Showa Era. It was a big hit in Japan and even came into the States, titled as Godzilla, King of the Monsters. The design of Godzilla was created by  Eiji Tsuburaya, who is also best known for creating Ultraman.

Godzilla Raids Again (1955)

This was the second Godzilla movie in the Showa Era. It was a sequel to the original and was the first movie to feature monsters other than Godzilla. It came to the States, titled as Gigantis, the Fire Monster.

King Kong vs Godzilla (1962)

This was the third Godzilla movie of the Showa Era. It was a crossover between Godzilla and King Kong.

Mothra vs Godzilla (1964)

This was the fourth Godzilla movie of the Showa Era. It was a crossover between Mothra and Godzilla.

Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)

This was the fifth Godzilla movie of the Showa Era. The movie featured a new monster, King Ghidorah.

Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)

This was the sixth Godzilla movie of the Showa Era.

Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966)

This was the seventh Godzilla movie of the Showa Era.

Son of Godzilla (1967)

This was the eighth Godzilla movie of the Showa Era. The movie introducted Godzilla's son.

Destroy All Monsters (1968)

This was the ninth Godzilla movie in the Showa Era.

All Monsters Attack (1969)

This was the tenth Godzilla movie in the Showa Era.

Godzilla vs Hedorah (1971)

This was the eleventh Godzilla movie in the Showa Era.

Godzilla vs Gigan (1972)

This was the twelfth Godzilla movie in the Showa Era.

Godzilla vs Megalon (1973)

This was the thirteenth Godzilla movie in the Showa Era.

Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)

This was the fourteenth Godzilla movie of the Showa Era.

Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

This was the fifteenth and last Godzilla movie of the Showa Era.

Return of Godzilla (1984)

This was the sixteenth movie overall, but the first in the Heisei Era. This movie celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Godzilla.

Godzilla vs Biollante (1989)

This was the seventeenth movie overall and the second in the Heisei Era.

Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1991)

This was the eighteenth movie overall and the third in the Heisei Era.

Godzilla vs Mothra (1992)

This was the nineteenth movie overall and the fourth in the Heisei Era.

Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II (1993)

This was the twentieth movie overall and the fifth in the Heisei Era.

Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla (1994)

This was the twenty-first film overall and the sixth film in the Heisei Era.

Godzilla vs Destoroyah (1995)

This was the twenty-second film overall and the seventh and last film in the Heisei Era.

Godzilla (1998)

This was the first American Godzilla reboot and the twenty-third film overall. Most people were not pleased with this film and Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 16%.

Godzilla 2000: Millenium (1999)

This was the twenty-fourth film overall and the first film of the Millennium Era.

Godzilla vs Megaguirus (2000)

This was the twenty-fifth film overall and the second film of the Millennium Era.

Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)

This was the twenty-sixth film overall and the third film of the Millennium Era.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)

This was the twenty-seventh film overall and the fourth film of the Millennium Era.

Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S (2003)

This was the twenty-eighth film oveall and the fifth film of the Millennium Era.

Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

This was the twenty-ninth film overall and the sixth film of the Millennium Era.

Godzilla (2014)

This was the second American reboot of the Godzilla franchise and the thirtieth film overall.

Shin Godzilla (2016)

This was the thirty-first film overall. It was the third reboot of Godzilla after Godzilla (1998) and Godzilla (2014).

Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (2017)

This is the first film of the anime trilogy and the thirty-second film overall.



Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (2018)
This is the second film of the anime trilogy and the thirty-third film overall.

Godzilla: Eater of Stars (2018)
This will be the third and final film of the anime trilogy and the thirty-fourth film overall.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
This is the continuation of the 2014 reboot and is the thirty-fifth film overall.
